PhytoD3™ vegan Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3 is mainly associated with bone formation. In fact, vitamin D3 plays a role in other metabolic processes, in the formation of proteins and, last but not least, in strengthening the immune system.
What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D comprises a group of fat-soluble molecules essential for numerous biological functions. The most significant compounds are vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Cholecalciferol is preferred due to its superior bioavailability, with studies showing that D3 remains active in the body for longer durations. Uniquely, D3 is the only vitamin the human body can synthesise in the lower layers of the epidermis, a process dependent on sun exposure. Dietary recommendations typically focus on oral intake, as biosynthesis varies, and extended sun exposure is generally not advised due to increased skin cancer risk.
Sources of Vitamin D3 in food
Dietary sources of vitamin D are limited, with vitamin D3 found almost exclusively in animal-based foods such as fatty fish, beef liver, and egg yolks. Fungal sources typically provide vitamin D2. Lichen, a natural non-animal source of vitamin D3, has been available for some time, though its concentration is low and widespread use is limited by its relatively high cost. Traditionally, synthetic vitamin D3 production has relied entirely on lanolin, derived from sheep’s wool, making vegan alternatives scarce and costly.
A real and attractive alternative…
For the first time, vegans and vegetarians have a commercially attractive, all-natural alternative. In collaboration with our long-term development partner, ECA Healthcare Inc., we are thrilled to introduce our new vegan Phyto D3™. This product is centred around an all-natural fermentation process starting from a food compound: phytosterols. The conformity of our product with the monograph of cholecalcierol in Eur.Ph. was confirmed by an independent laboratory. . Our product types PhytoD3™ oil and powder are therefore fully marketable.
